CS2 Trading Glossary

Short answer

This glossary explains 80 CS2 trading terms in plain English, from float value and pattern index to trade holds, trade-ups and provably fair. Each term has a one-line definition you can quote, a longer explanation, an example and links to related terms and tools.

A

API key scam: A Steam API key scam is a theft method where a phished login is used to register a Web API key on your account, and a script then cancels your real trade offers and replaces them with copies sent to a lookalike account.
Arbitrage: CS2 skin arbitrage is buying a skin on one marketplace where it is cheap and selling the same skin on another where it is dearer, keeping the difference after fees.

B

Battle-Scarred: Battle-Scarred is the lowest wear tier for a CS2 skin, covering float values from 0.45 up to 1.00, and it shows the most fading and scratching a finish can have.
Blue gem: A CS2 blue gem is a Case Hardened skin whose pattern index places mostly blue on the visible playside, making it one of the rarest and most expensive pattern-based items in the game.
Bot trading: Bot trading in CS2 is buying or selling skins through automated Steam accounts run by a marketplace, where you deposit items into the site's bot and the site handles the sale or swap from its own inventory.
Buy order: A CS2 buy order is a standing offer on a marketplace that says you will pay a set price for a set item the moment any seller agrees, so the trade fills automatically without you watching the market.

C

Case: A CS2 case is a tradable weapon crate that, when opened with a matching key, gives one random item from a fixed list of skins, with knives or gloves as the rare special drop.
Case battle: A CS2 case battle is a game on third-party case-opening sites where two or more players open the same set of cases at the same time and the player whose items are worth the most takes every item from the round.
Case Hardened: A CS2 Case Hardened is a skin finish with a mottled mix of blue, purple and gold whose layout changes with each pattern index, so a rare mostly-blue copy, called a blue gem, can be worth far more than a normal one.
Case key: A CS2 case key is the item bought from the in-game store that unlocks a matching case, and since keys bought today cannot be traded or sold, the key price sets the real cost of every case opening.
Cash out: Cashing out CS2 skins means turning items in your Steam inventory into real money you can spend outside Steam, usually by selling on a third-party marketplace and withdrawing to a bank, PayPal or crypto wallet.
Charm: A CS2 charm, which Valve calls a Charm and players often call a keychain, is a small tradable trinket you hang on a weapon skin, one per weapon, that can be removed with a Charm Detachment tool.
Classified: Classified is the pink rarity tier in CS2, the second-highest grade for weapon skins, and it drops from cases at about 3.2% per opening according to Valve's published odds.
Client seed: A client seed is the value a player supplies to a provably fair CS2 gambling site, mixed with the site's server seed and a nonce so that the site cannot know the final input to each roll in advance.
Coinflip: A CS2 coinflip is a two-player skin gambling game where each player puts up items or balance of similar value, a provably fair roll picks one side, and the winner takes both stakes minus the site's cut.
Collection: A CS2 collection is a named set of weapon skins released together, either inside a case or as a map collection, and it decides which skins a trade-up contract can produce.
Consumer Grade: Consumer Grade is the lowest rarity tier for CS2 weapon skins, shown with a white or light grey label, and it covers the cheapest and most common finishes in the game.
Contraband: Contraband is a one-of-a-kind CS2 rarity tier that applies only to the M4A4 | Howl, a skin Valve removed from cases after a copyright dispute over its artwork.
Covert: Covert is the red rarity tier in CS2, the highest grade for standard weapon skins, and it drops from cases at about 0.64% per opening according to Valve's published odds.
Crash: Crash is a skin gambling game where a multiplier rises from 1.00 and can stop at any moment, and a player wins their bet times the multiplier only if they cash out before the round crashes.

D

Doppler: A CS2 Doppler is a knife or weapon finish with a marbled, shifting colour pattern whose look, called its phase, is decided by the pattern index, so two Dopplers with the same name can differ a lot in price.
Doppler phase: A CS2 Doppler phase is the community label for how a Doppler or Gamma Doppler skin looks, with numbered phases 1 to 4 and the rare gem phases Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl and Emerald, all fixed by the item's pattern index.
Drop pool: A CS2 drop pool is the list of cases, skin collections and other items that can appear in weekly drops, split into an active pool that drops often and a rare or discontinued pool that drops seldom or never, which is why pool changes move case prices.

E

Expected value (EV): Expected value (EV) in CS2 trading is the average result you would get from a trade-up, case opening or trade if you repeated it many times, found by multiplying each possible outcome by its odds and adding them up.

F

Factory New: Factory New is the best wear tier for a CS2 skin, covering float values from 0.00 up to 0.07, and it shows the cleanest version of a finish with little or no visible scratching.
Fade: A CS2 Fade is a skin finish with a smooth colour gradient across the item, and the pattern index sets how much of the gradient shows, which traders express as a fade percentage.
Fake Steam login page: A fake Steam login page is a web page built to look exactly like Steam's sign-in form so that you type your username, password and Steam Guard code into a form that sends them to a scammer.
Field-Tested: Field-Tested is the middle wear tier for a CS2 skin, covering float values from 0.15 up to 0.38, and it is the most common wear because its range is the widest of the five.
Float cap: A CS2 float cap is the minimum and maximum float value a specific skin finish can have, set by Valve for each finish, and it controls which wear tiers that skin can exist in.
Float capping: Float capping is a CS2 trade-up technique where you choose input floats so the contract's output lands just inside a better wear tier, using the output skin's float cap to turn worn inputs into a cleaner result.
Float value: A CS2 float value is a fixed number between 0 and 1 assigned to every weapon skin when it is created, and it sets how worn the skin looks and which wear tier it falls into.

G

Gloves: CS2 gloves are cosmetic hand skins in the gold Rare Special Item tier that replace the default player gloves, drop from selected cases instead of knives, and rank with knives as the most valuable items in the game.

H

House edge: The house edge on a CS2 case-opening or gambling site is the share of every bet the site expects to keep on average, so a 10 percent house edge means players as a group lose 10 dollars of every 100 dollars they wager over time.

I

Industrial Grade: Industrial Grade is the second-lowest rarity tier for CS2 weapon skins, marked with a light blue label, and it sits between Consumer Grade and Mil-Spec on the rarity ladder.
Inspect link: A CS2 inspect link is a special Steam URL that opens a specific skin inside the game so you can see its exact wear, pattern and stickers before you buy or trade for it.
Instant sell: Instant sell in CS2 is a marketplace option where the site buys your skin on the spot at a fixed offer price, usually below market value, instead of you listing it and waiting for a buyer.

K

Knife: A CS2 knife is a cosmetic melee weapon skin in the gold Rare Special Item tier, obtained from cases, Covert trade-ups or other players, and it is usually the most valuable item type in a trading inventory.
KYC (Know Your Customer): KYC, or Know Your Customer, is the identity check a CS2 marketplace or case-opening site runs before it lets you deposit or withdraw money, usually by asking for a government ID and sometimes a selfie or proof of address.

L

Liquidity: Liquidity in CS2 trading is how quickly you can sell a skin at close to its listed price, so a liquid skin sells in minutes with a tight spread while an illiquid one can sit for weeks or only sell at a deep discount.
Lowball: A lowball in CS2 trading is an offer far below the market value of a skin, made in the hope that the owner is impatient, uninformed or desperate enough to accept it.

M

Major: A CS2 Major is a Valve-sponsored top-tier tournament held a few times a year, and it matters to traders because each Major brings its own sticker capsules, Souvenir packages and viewer drops that stop being made once the event ends.
Marketplace (third-party): A third-party CS2 marketplace is a website outside Steam where players buy and sell skins for real money that can be withdrawn, using Steam trade offers to move the items and the site's own system to move the cash.
Middleman: A middleman in CS2 trading is a third person who holds one side of a trade, such as the skin, until the other side pays, and "middleman scams" are fake versions of this role used to steal items.
Mil-Spec: Mil-Spec is the blue rarity tier in CS2, the lowest grade that drops from weapon cases and the most common result when a case is opened.
Minimal Wear: Minimal Wear is the second-best wear tier for a CS2 skin, covering float values from 0.07 up to 0.15, and it shows light scratching that is often hard to notice in a match.

N

Nonce: A nonce in a provably fair CS2 gambling system is a counter that goes up by one with every bet, so the same server seed and client seed produce a different result each round and every past bet can be replayed by its number.

O

Operation: A CS2 operation is a paid, time-limited event from Valve that adds missions, new maps and exclusive rewards, including operation-only cases, skins, agents and stickers that become scarcer once the operation ends.
Overpay: Overpay in CS2 trading is the extra value a trader asks for above the market price of their item, most often when the item is rare, in demand or being swapped for several smaller skins.

P

P2P trading: P2P (peer-to-peer) trading in CS2 is a sale where the skin moves directly from the seller's Steam inventory to the buyer's through a Steam trade offer, while a marketplace only handles the payment and matching.
Paint index: A CS2 paint index is the internal number Valve assigns to each skin finish, so every AK-47 | Redline shares one paint index while each copy still has its own float value and pattern index.
Pattern index: A CS2 pattern index, also called the paint seed, is a whole number from 0 to 1000 assigned to a skin when it is created, and it sets how the finish's texture is placed on the weapon model.
Phishing: Phishing in CS2 trading is any trick that gets you to type your Steam login, Steam Guard code or other private details into a fake page or message controlled by a scammer.
Prime status: CS2 Prime status is a one-time paid upgrade to a Counter-Strike 2 account that unlocks weekly item drops, ranked matchmaking modes and Prime-only matchmaking, and free accounts without it receive no drops at all.
Provably fair: Provably fair is a system used by CS2 case-opening and gambling sites where each result comes from a server seed, a client seed and a nonce, so a player can check after the fact that the site did not change the outcome once the bet was placed.

R

Rare Special Item: A Rare Special Item is the gold-labelled tier in CS2 that covers knives and gloves, the rarest result a weapon case can produce at about 0.26% per opening according to Valve's published odds.
Restricted: Restricted is the purple rarity tier in CS2, one step above Mil-Spec, and it drops from cases at roughly 16% per opening according to Valve's published odds.
Roulette: Roulette on CS2 skin gambling sites is a game where players bet balance on a colour or number, a provably fair spin picks one slot, and the site pays a set multiplier while keeping a house edge through slots that pay nobody.
RTP (Return to Player): RTP, or Return to Player, is the percentage of all money wagered that a CS2 gambling game pays back to players on average over the long run, so a 95 percent RTP means the site keeps 5 percent and the house edge is 5 percent.

S

Server seed: A server seed is the secret random value a provably fair CS2 gambling site generates before a round, shown to the player only as a hash until the round ends so the site cannot change results after bets are placed.
Skin investing: CS2 skin investing is buying cases, capsules, stickers or skins with the plan to hold them for months or years and sell later at a higher price, betting on the item getting rarer or more wanted over time.
Souvenir: A CS2 Souvenir is a skin from a Souvenir package tied to a Major tournament, carrying gold team and event stickers plus the match details, and it is priced on the sticker set and the skin rather than on the skin alone.
Spread: The spread on a CS2 skin is the gap between the highest price a buyer will pay right now (the bid) and the lowest price a seller will accept (the ask), and it is the hidden cost of every quick sale.
StatTrak: A CS2 StatTrak item is a skin, knife or music kit with a built-in counter that records the owner's kills or plays, marked with an orange StatTrak label and usually priced above the normal version.
Steam Community Market: The Steam Community Market is Valve's built-in marketplace where players list CS2 items for other players, with the sale paid in Steam Wallet funds after a 5 percent Steam fee and a 10 percent CS2 game fee.
Steam Guard: Steam Guard is Valve's two-factor login protection for Steam accounts that sends a code by email or through the Steam Mobile app whenever someone signs in from a new device.
Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator: The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is the phone-based two-factor tool in the Steam Mobile app that generates login codes and confirms trades and Market listings, and it must be active for 7 days before trades go through without a hold.
Steam Wallet: The Steam Wallet is the balance attached to a Steam account that holds money from Community Market sales and top-ups, and it can only be spent on Steam, never withdrawn as cash.
Steam Web API key: A Steam Web API key is a code registered at steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey that lets software read your account data and manage your trade offers, which is why scammers try to plant one on your account.
Sticker: A CS2 sticker is a tradable item you apply to a weapon skin, up to five per weapon, and it can be worth more than the skin it sits on, especially rare team, player or holographic stickers from old Majors.
Sticker capsule: A CS2 sticker capsule is a container that opens into one random sticker from a set list, and Major tournament capsules are the ones traders watch because their stickers stop being made once the event ends.
Sticker craft: A CS2 sticker craft is a weapon skin with stickers applied on purpose in a planned layout, often matching stickers on a fitting skin, and it is valued by how well the combination works rather than by adding up the parts.

T

Trade hold: A Steam trade hold is a waiting period, usually 15 days, that Steam puts on a trade or Market listing when the account does not have the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator active for at least 7 days.
Trade offer: A Steam trade offer is a proposal sent from one Steam account to another that lists the items each side will give and receive, and it only completes when the receiver accepts it and both sides confirm.
Trade protection: CS2 trade protection is a Valve system that marks every item received in a trade as Trade Protected for 7 days, during which it cannot be traded, sold or modified and the original owner can reverse the trade.
Trade reversal: A CS2 trade reversal is the action of undoing every Counter-Strike 2 trade on a Steam account from the last 7 days, returning all items to their previous owners and locking the account out of trading for 30 days.
Trade URL: A Steam trade URL is a personal link that lets anyone, including people who are not on your friends list, send you a trade offer, and it can be regenerated at any time to cancel the old one.
Trade-up contract: A CS2 trade-up contract lets you exchange ten skins of the same rarity for one random skin of the next rarity up, drawn from the collections of your inputs, and since October 2025 five Covert skins can be traded up into a knife or gloves.

U

Upgrader: An upgrader is a CS2 gambling game where you stake a skin or balance for a chance at a more expensive item, with the win chance set by the ratio of the two values minus a house edge, so you either receive the better item or lose your stake.

W

Weekly drop: A CS2 weekly drop, delivered through the weekly care package, gives Prime players who rank up during the week a choice of four items from the active drop pool, of which they can keep two.
Well-Worn: Well-Worn is the second-lowest wear tier for a CS2 skin, covering float values from 0.38 up to 0.45, and it is the least common tier because its float range is the narrowest.
