How CS2 Weekly Drops Work

Short answer

A CS2 weekly drop is the free Weekly Care Package that Prime accounts unlock the first time they level up each week. Each level takes 5,000 XP from official matches. The package offers four items, such as cases, skins and graffiti, and you keep two. Valve decides which collections can appear and changes that drop list in updates.

What is a CS2 weekly drop?

A CS2 weekly drop is the reward you get for playing each week. When Counter-Strike 2 launched on 27 September 2023, Valve "replaced weekly drops with a weekly Care Package" and said you "choose from weapon cases, weapon finishes, and graffiti" (release notes). Players still call it the weekly drop, so both names mean the same thing.

The package does not open by itself. When you earn it, it waits in the main menu until you pick your items. Once you claim them, they go straight to your inventory. You can keep them, use them, or sell them.

Who can get the weekly care package?

Only accounts with Prime Status. Valve's Prime Status FAQ answers the question "Will I receive weekly care packages if I do not have Prime Status?" with a plain "No. In order to receive weekly care packages you must have Prime Status."

The same FAQ says players without Prime "will not receive XP from any game mode on any server." That matters because XP is what unlocks the drop. So a free account has no way to earn it at all.

Prime is a purchase that stays on your account. The FAQ says it can be bought in-game or on the Steam Store, and that "there is no way to remove Prime Status from your account." Our glossary entry on Prime status has more on what else it unlocks.

How much XP do you need for a weekly drop?

You need to level up your profile once in the week. The Counter-Strike Wiki's Profile Rank page lists 5,000 XP for each level and says "the first time the player ranks up in a week, the player also receives a weapon drop." Only that first level-up counts. Leveling up again the same week does not give you a second package.

XP comes from finishing matches on official Valve servers. A few things help you get there faster:

  • The weekly XP bonus. The Profile Rank page describes a weekly bonus pool that multiplies the XP from your first matches of the week. It runs out as you play, so early matches in the week are worth more.
  • Weekly Missions. Valve added them on 7 May 2025. The release notes say "Players receive one mission each week. The weekly mission expires after 7 days and rewards XP for completion."
  • Finishing the match. The Wiki notes that leaving a match early gives no XP.

After a certain point, extra XP earns much less. Valve's 6 February 2024 notes describe players who "have earned all of their normal XP during the week (11,166 XP) and reached reduced XP gain." Those players get an "XP Overload" badge. For the drop, you only need the first level, so grinding past it does not get you more items.

How does the care package work?

The care package shows four items and you keep two. Skinport's weekly drop guide says the package holds four items and "you can pick any 2 of the 4." The two you skip are gone once you confirm.

Here is the whole process in order:

  1. Make sure your account has Prime Status.
  2. Play matches on official servers until your profile levels up for the first time that week.
  3. Open the care package from the main menu.
  4. Look at the four offers. Hover over each one to see what it is.
  5. Pick two and confirm. They go to your inventory.

One small tip from Valve's own notes: make sure your inventory has room. The 10 June 2026 update added an error message for when "user's inventory is full and they try to redeem Weekly Care Package rewards." If your inventory is full, clear space first.

What can be in a CS2 weekly drop?

Valve's launch notes name three types: weapon cases, weapon finishes (skins) and graffiti. Since then, Valve has added a newer kind of item to the drop list, the Terminal.

Item typeWhat it isWorth claiming?
Weapon caseA sealed case. You need a key to open it.Often the best pick to sell or hold.
Weapon finish (skin)A skin from a collection on the drop list. Most are low value, but a rare one can beat the case.
GraffitiA spray you can use in game.Usually worth the least.
TerminalA Terminal like the Genesis Uplink Terminal or Dead Hand Terminal.Free to claim, but the item inside must be bought.

The Terminals need a warning. Valve's 16 September 2025 notes said Genesis Collection items are accessed "via the Genesis Uplink Terminal, available as a weekly drop." The Dead Hand announcement of 11 March 2026 is clearer: "You can purchase Dead Hand Collection items from Dead Hand Terminals, which are available now as a possible weekly drop." So a Terminal is a shop you get for free. The skin inside is not free.

What is the CS2 drop pool?

The drop pool is the list of cases and collections that can appear in your care package. Valve calls it the "Weekly Care Package drop list" in its release notes. When Valve adds or removes a collection, the notes say so.

Two recent examples show how it works:

  • On 31 March 2025, Valve "added three all-new weapon collections to the Weekly Care Package drop list: Ascent, Boreal, and Radiant" and "removed four weapon collections from the Weekly Care Package drop list: Bank, Italy, Lake, and the original Train collection" (update notes).
  • On 21 January 2026, Valve added "Harlequin, Achroma" and removed "Safehouse, Dust 2, 2018 Nuke Collection, and the 2018 Inferno Collection" (update notes).

Valve's notes list which collections are on the drop list. They do not give the odds for each of the four offers, and they do not publish one page with the full current list. Community sites build their own lists from what players get. Check that any list you use is dated after the latest update. Our glossary entries for weekly drop and drop pool give the short versions.

How do drop pool changes affect prices?

When a case or collection leaves the drop list, no new copies come from drops. The supply stops growing. Every case that gets opened removes one copy for good. That is why traders watch these notes closely.

A case that is still on the list keeps getting minted every week. Its price tends to stay low because new copies keep arriving. We explain this in more detail, with the risks, in how case drop pool changes affect prices. It is a pattern, not a promise, and Valve can change the rules at any time.

Which weekly drop item should you pick?

For most players the answer is simple: pick the two items worth the most money, unless you want to use one.

Here is a way to decide:

  1. Check the price of each offer. Look up each item on the Steam Community Market or use our inventory value tool once the items are in your inventory.
  2. Count the fees if you plan to sell. Selling on the Steam Market takes a fee. The Steam fee calculator shows what you actually get.
  3. Skip the Terminal if you do not plan to buy. It has no free item inside.
  4. Think twice before opening a dropped case. Opening needs a paid key, and most openings return less than the key costs. The drop rates page shows the real odds, and the case simulator lets you try it without spending anything.

Some players hold dropped cases for years in case they leave the pool. That can work, but it can also go nowhere. Read are CS2 skins a good investment before you treat drops as savings.

When does the weekly drop reset?

Once a week. Skinport's guide says progress "resets once per week, usually on Tuesday night or early Wednesday (based on your local time zone)" and that there is "no rollover or accumulation of XP for future drops." If you miss a week, you do not get two drops the next week.

You do not need to guess the time. Valve's 3 November 2023 notes changed the redemption screen "to show remaining time before weekly rollover." Check that timer in the game before you plan your week.

How is the weekly drop different from the Armory?

The Armory is a separate system that also runs on XP, and people often mix them up. Valve's Armory FAQ says Armory Passes are "purchasable items" that reward Armory Credits as you earn XP. It also says credit progress "is consistent and separate from your weekly profile XP."

So the two do not compete. Your weekly care package still arrives when you level up, whether or not you have an Armory Pass. The difference is cost: the care package is free with Prime, while the Armory needs a pass you pay for.

Are weekly drops worth the time?

For a player who already plays most weeks, yes, since it costs nothing extra. Most weeks you will get a case and a low-value skin. Now and then, a better skin shows up.

For someone thinking of buying Prime just for drops, do the math first. Look up what recent drops sell for after fees and compare that with what you would pay. Most people buy Prime for better matchmaking and treat the drops as a small bonus.
