What are Doppler phases in CS2?
Doppler phases are the different colour versions of the Doppler knife finish. One name on the Steam Market, the Doppler, covers seven very different-looking knives. Four of them are common and called Phase 1 through Phase 4. Three are rare and named after gemstones: Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl.
Which one you get is decided when the knife is created and never changes. Inside the game's item data, each phase is a separate paint index, the number that identifies which texture a skin uses. The Doppler is the only mainstream finish where several paint indexes share one market name, which is why the phase system exists at all.
Gamma Doppler is a separate finish with its own four phases and its own rare version, Emerald, covered below.
This matters for money because the phases trade at very different prices under the same name. Knowing how to tell them apart, and what each is worth relative to the others, is the difference between a fair deal and a bad one.
What does each Doppler phase look like?
All Doppler phases share the same marbled, metallic texture. The colours are what differ.

The price gap between the groups is much bigger than the gap within them. A Ruby or Sapphire of a given knife is usually worth several times a Phase 2 of the same knife. Phases 1 and 3 versus 2 and 4 is a smaller difference, and it moves with fashion.
Within a phase, copies differ too. Some Phase 2 knives are very pink on the playside, others are mostly purple. Some Phase 4 knives are nearly all blue. Those differences come from the pattern index, explained in the section on float and pattern below.
What are Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl?
These are the rare Doppler outcomes. They use the same marble texture, but the paint index sets the colour to one gem tone with little or no mixing.
- Ruby is red. A good Ruby looks like a single polished red stone with dark marbling.
- Sapphire is blue. Same idea in blue, and usually the most expensive of the three.
- Black Pearl is dark, with a violet and green sheen that shifts as the knife moves. It is the one most often mistaken for a Phase 1 or Phase 3 in bad lighting.
Valve has never published the odds of getting a gem phase from a case. The community has estimated them from large samples of openings, and the short version is that the gem phases are a small share of all Doppler outcomes and Black Pearl is the smallest.
Because they are rare and striking, gem Dopplers are collector items. Their prices are driven by the small number that exist for each knife type, so a Ruby on a common knife can cost less than a Ruby on a knife that rarely appears in cases.
What are Gamma Doppler phases and Emerald?
Gamma Doppler is a different finish that came with the Gamma cases. It uses the same marble idea with a green, teal and black palette instead of red and blue.

Emerald is to Gamma Doppler what Sapphire is to Doppler: the solid-colour rare version and the expensive one. Among the four normal Gamma phases, Phase 2 is usually the most sought after because it is the brightest.
Doppler and Gamma Doppler are separate finishes. A Gamma Doppler knife cannot be a Ruby, and a Doppler cannot be an Emerald.
How do you tell which phase a Doppler is?
The Steam Market lists every phase under one name, so you have to look.
- Look at the image. On any listing, the picture shows the actual knife. Red means Phase 1 or Ruby, pink means Phase 2, green means Phase 3, blue means Phase 4 or Sapphire, dark with a sheen means Black Pearl or a dark Phase 1 or 3.
- Inspect in game. Rotate the knife. A Ruby or Sapphire stays one colour from every angle. A Phase 1 or 4 shows marbling and black areas. A Black Pearl shifts between violet and green as it turns.
- Use a checker. Paste the inspect link into the float checker. Tools that read the paint index report the phase directly, which removes the guesswork.
- Trust third-party listings, but verify. Most marketplaces label the phase and let you filter by it. That label is read from the item data, so it is reliable. Screenshots from a seller are not.
Two traps. A Phase 1 photographed under strong red light can pass for a Ruby to someone who has never seen one. And a Phase 4 with a very blue pattern can be sold as "basically a Sapphire". It is not. The paint index is either Sapphire or it is not, and a checker settles it.
Why do Doppler phases cost different amounts?
Two things: how many exist and what people like.
Supply. The gem phases are rare outcomes, so few exist for any given knife. The four normal phases are roughly equally common, so their supply is similar.
Demand. Bright, single-colour looks are what most buyers want. That puts Sapphire and Ruby on top, then Phase 2 and Phase 4 for their pink and blue, then the darker Phase 1 and Phase 3. Fashion moves the middle of that ranking. A popular streamer using a Phase 3 can lift its price for months.
Knife type. Every phase exists on every Doppler knife, but the knives themselves differ in price. A Karambit or Butterfly Doppler costs more than a Gut Knife Doppler in every phase, and the gem premium on the expensive knives is larger in absolute terms.
Wear. Doppler only exists in Factory New and Minimal Wear because of its float cap, and the two look similar, so wear moves Doppler prices less than it does on most skins. Factory New still carries a premium.

Does float or pattern matter on a Doppler?
Both, a little, and less than the phase.
Float. The Doppler finish has a capped float range that keeps it in Factory New and Minimal Wear. The float cap calculator shows the exact range. Because the whole range is clean, a 0.01 and a 0.06 Doppler look almost the same, and the wear premium is smaller than on a skin that runs to Battle-Scarred. Collectors still pay extra for very low floats on gem phases, because rare plus rare is rarer.
Pattern. The pattern index does not decide the phase. It shifts where the colours sit within the phase. On a Phase 2 that means how much pink lands on the playside versus purple and black. On a Phase 4 it means how much blue. Collectors name the best ones ("max pink", "max blue"). On the gem phases the pattern matters less, since they are close to one colour anyway, though a Black Pearl's pattern changes how much sheen shows. The order of importance for a Doppler price is: knife type, then phase, then pattern within the phase, then float. Keep that order in mind when comparing listings and you will not overpay for the wrong thing.
How do you avoid overpaying for a Doppler?
- Verify the phase with a checker, not a photo. The float checker reads the item data. A screenshot reads whatever the seller wants you to see.
- Compare within the same phase and knife. A Phase 2 Karambit price tells you nothing about a Phase 2 Gut Knife or a Phase 4 Karambit.
- Check the playside in an inspect, not the icon. The inventory icon shows one angle. Rotate it.
- Do not pay Sapphire money for a blue Phase 4. It is a Phase 4. The label is in the data.
- Remember the Steam Market hides the phase. A cheap Doppler listing there may be a Phase 1 or 3 priced correctly, not a bargain. Valve's Community Market FAQ notes all purchases are final, so look before you buy.
- Treat trade-up Dopplers as a lottery. A Covert-to-knife trade-up that lands on a Doppler gives you a random phase. The float values guide covers how the output's wear is set, but the phase is not something you can target.
