CS2 Premier Ranks Explained

What are Premier ranks in CS2?

Premier is CS2's main ranked mode, and its rank is a number called CS Rating. Valve introduced it on 31 August 2023 and described it as "a visible measurement of your Counter-Strike performance" that "will determine where you stand on global and regional leaderboards" (announcement). Valve called Premier "our Active Duty Pick-Ban competitive mode."

People search for "CS2 Elo" because CS Rating works like an Elo-style rating. You win, it goes up. You lose, it goes down. The Counter-Strike Wiki calls it a "visible elo rating." Unlike the old CS:GO ranks, everyone in the match can see it.

CS2 also has a second ranked system in Competitive mode, with the classic badges from Silver I to Global Elite. The two are separate, which is why people get confused. This guide covers both.

What are the CS2 Premier rating colors?

CS Rating is shown in seven colors. Valve confirmed in its 10 October 2023 notes that color boundaries sit "every 5000 CS Rating points." The Counter-Strike Wiki lists the colors like this:

Crossing a color line is a bigger moment than normal points. Valve's same notes say "Relegation and Promotion matches will only occur at color boundaries." The Wiki explains that when a win would lift you over a boundary like 10,000, your next match becomes a promotion match. When a loss would drop you onto one, the next match is a relegation match.

How do you get a CS Rating?

You need three things:

1. Prime Status. Valve's Prime FAQ says free players can use every mode "with the exception of Premier Mode, which requires Prime Status to participate in."
2. Profile Level 10. The same FAQ says players "must own Prime Status and be Profile Level 10" to access Premier.
3. 10 Premier wins. Valve's Seasons Change post says that at the start of a season "you will need to re-establish your CS Rating by winning 10 matches." Until then, your number stays hidden.

The same Prime FAQ adds that "Competitive Skill Groups and Counter-Strike Rating are only issued to users with Prime Status." A free account can play Competitive matches but will not get a rank.

How does placement work at the start of a season?

Premier runs in seasons. Season One started with the CS2 launch on 27 September 2023 (release notes). Season Five began on 8 July 2026 (update notes), with Cache added to the map pool and Overpass removed.

When a new season starts, your old number does not carry over as it was. Valve's Season Two post explained that "your CS Rating will be recalibrated for the new season based on your Season One performance." You then need 10 wins before the new rating shows. So a strong last season gives you a head start, but you still have to play your placements.

How do Premier season medals work?

Each season ends with a medal for players who qualify. Valve's Seasons Change post sets the rules:

• Color. "The color will correspond to your highest CS Rating achieved during the season."
• Bars. The bars show your total wins, with one bar for every 25 wins, up to five bars.
• Eligibility. To earn the medal, "you'll need an account in good standing, 25 Premier match wins, and an active CSR at the end of the season."

That last part matters. If your rating goes inactive right before the season ends, you can miss the medal even with enough wins.

Does CS2 Premier rating decay?

Not the way it did in some other games, but it can go inactive. The Counter-Strike Wiki says your CS Rating "is active for a limited time before it's expired from inactivity" if you stop playing Premier. When that happens, you drop off the leaderboard and "must win 1 Premier match to show [your] CS rating again." The number that comes back can be higher or lower than before.

How long you have depends on your rating. The Wiki says "higher CS ratings" stay active for fewer days, roughly two to four weeks. Once you have 25 Premier wins in the season, hovering over the "i" icon next to season progress in the Premier menu shows how long your rating stays active.

Valve has touched this system too. Its 8 November 2023 notes "adjusted the algorithm for re-establishing CS Rating after a period of inactivity in Premier mode." The safest habit is to play at least one Premier match every couple of weeks if you care about your number.

How do Premier leaderboards work?

Valve's Leaderboards FAQ says Prime players who play Premier "are eligible for display on public leaderboards when they are among the top 1,000 players in their region."

There are nine leaderboards: Friends, World, Africa, Asia, Australia, China, Europe, North America and South America. You cannot pick your region. The FAQ says your regional board "is determined by the location of the servers that you play on the most."

How does map selection work in Premier?

Premier used to ban maps down to a single one. On 22 September 2026, Valve changed that (Rush Hour post). Per the update notes, Team 1 picks one map, Team 2 picks two maps, and Team 1 picks a final map. Then "one of the four maps will be randomly selected and the match will begin."

The goal, in Valve's words, was "to give players more opportunities to play maps they've been learning." If you only know two or three maps well, the new process makes it more likely you play one of them.

How are Competitive ranks different from Premier?

Competitive mode keeps the classic CS badges, but in CS2 they work per map. The Counter-Strike Wiki's Competitive page explains that "the player can be Silver III on Mirage, but Master Guardian I on Nuke at the same time."

Valve's 25 June 2024 notes say "per-map skill groups are now revealed after you earn two wins on a map." The Wiki adds that a map rank is hidden if you have not played that map in Competitive for 28 days. And on 21 January 2026, Valve reset them: "Existing per-map competitive Skill Groups have been expired, and will be displayed again once the player obtains the required number of wins" (update notes).

Is buying a rank boost or ranked account safe?

No, and this is where ranks meet account safety. Most boosting services need your login. The Steam Subscriber Agreement says "You may not reveal, share or otherwise allow others to use your password or Account." It also says you may not sell or "otherwise transfer your Account," so buying a ranked account breaks the same rules.

Playing with cheaters is risky too. Valve's launch notes say that "when one or more party members get convicted of cheating and permanently banned, all their associates will be penalized with loss of Profile Rank and CS Rating." How can you climb Premier ranks?

The honest answer is to play more and play on fewer maps, now that map picks favor what you practice. Settings help you feel consistent, even if they will not win games alone.
